The Appaloosa is a horse breed known for its preferred leopard-spotted coat pattern and other distinctive physical characteristics. While there is evidence of leopard-spotted horses dating back to the Paleolithic era in Europe, the Nez Perce people of the American Pacific Northwest developed the American breed. They were once referred to by white settlers as the “Palouse horse”, possibly after the Palouse River, which ran through the heart of Nez Perce country. Gradually, the name evolved into “Appaloosa”. The Nez Perce people lost most of their horses following the end of the Nez Perce War in 1877 and the breed fell into decline for several decades. However, a small number of dedicated breeders kept the Appaloosa alive for several decades until a registry was formed in 1938. Today the Appaloosa is one of the most popular breeds in the United States, and it was named the official state horse of Idaho in 1975.
The Appaloosa is best known as a stock horse used in a number of western riding disciplines, but is also a versatile breed with representatives seen in many other types of equestrian activity, as well as in many movies. The color pattern of the Appaloosa is of great interest to those who study equine coat color genetics, as both the coat pattern and several other physical characteristics are linked to the “Lp” or “leopard” gene or gene complex, but the precise inheritance mechanism is not fully understood. The Appaloosa has influenced many other horse breeds, including several gaited horse breeds.

Have you ever driven around Milton and wondered, “what in the world goes on at all those stables?” This article is meant to acquaint Miltonians to the Hunter/Jumper discipline and specifically introduce a very special training facility within our own city limits. There are many disciplines associated with equestrian sports, two of the most popular in our area are show Hunters and Jumpers. Milton is home to almost 20 Hunter Jumper barns and many more private facilities participate in this area of the sport. If you are curious about what’s going on beyond those gates keep reading….

Hunt seat is terminology used in the United States and Canada to refer to a style of forward seat riding commonly found at American horse shows. Along with Dressage, it is one of two classic forms of English riding. The Hunt seat is based on the tradition of fox hunting. Hunt seat competition in North America includes both flat and over fences for show hunters, which judges the horse’s movement and form, and equitation classes, which judge the rider’s form and ability both on the flat and over fences. Hunt seat is also the generic term used to describe any form of forward seat riding, including that seen in show jumping and eventing.

Hunt seat is an extremely popular form of riding in the United States, with shows guided by the USHJA (United States Hunter/Jumper Association) and the United States Equestrian Federation. While hunt seat showing is not an Olympic discipline, many show jumping competitors began by riding in the hunter divisions, before moving into the jumper divisions.

By Izelda Venter / Arh Farms

It’s a beautiful sunny day outside, with a slight breeze blowing just hard enough to keep you comfortable. The air you breathe in smells so fresh, it’s seems unreal. It’s like a natural high that you can’t get enough of. You take a deep breath and exhale. With each breath it seems as if your body is filled with peacefulness. All of your problems, stress and pain slowly evaporate with each breath you take. You’re surrounded by calmness, a sense of self-satisfaction and unconditional love and you are totally in your comfort zone. Your face shines with satisfaction. You look up and can’t help but notice all of the beautiful trees surrounding you with their leaves– each a unique color and shape of their own. The strong scent of fresh grass and horse manure makes you realize you are surrounded by nature. What better place to be than to find yourself at an equestrian center. Hoof beats sound like drums beating close to you. It feels as if you’re flying on a cloud…free at last so relaxed and comfortable. The sound of joggers and dogs being walked doesn’t seem to bother you … you’re so in tune with your “dream,” you forget you’re riding your best friend–a horse!

Lately, a lot of questions and concerns have come up regarding the new City of Milton. How and why do horses play such a huge part in today’s society? I brought it upon myself to try and educate the non-horse people about why horses play such a big role in today’s society.

Today we’re faced daily with so many issues and different circumstances, for example: marriages being split apart, problem teenagers, depression…..just to name a few, how do we go about helping society deal with all these kind of issues? There’s so much peer pressure going on in today’s society, I can’t imagine what it will be like 10 years from now! We have so many young peers out there that simply don’t know any better. We live in such a materialistic world today that we completely overlook the important stuff. What’s happening to today’s youth out there?

Had my parents never exposed me to the agricultural lifestyle I was brought up in with horses & ponies, I wouldn’t be the person I am today. I have always been quiet and shy. I was frequently in my own little world daydreaming. I can guarantee you if it wasn’t for horses to occupy my time, keeping me busy and out of trouble, I don’t know where I’d be today. I found my insecurities and needs being met by being surrounded by horses and animals. They had unconditional love to give, to them it didn’t matter who I was or what my background was or who my parents were, what kind of cars we drove, it didn’t matter, for in their eyes I was just someone taking the time to pet them. I was taking the responsibility of feeding and taking care of them. In return I was taught how to take responsibility for my actions, how to stand up for myself and how to take leadership, little did I know I’d be teaching young and old one day how to ride and about the uniqueness of these animals! That’s how it all started……” Twenty-four year old, Izilda Venter is the owner and trainer of ARH FARM located in Milton, GA.

First, let me share a little bit about myself:

At Afrikana Rock Harvest Farm (also known as ARH Farm), we’re known for our laid back environment and friendly, family and “at-home” atmosphere for both young and old. We strive to teach the foundational skills necessary for all riding disciplines as well as responsibility in taking care of animals in a fun and safe environment. ARH Farm is a small, private barn. It is family oriented and based on Christian morals and values. “Everyone feels welcome and important here.” The barn is run and owned by 24-year-old, Izilda Venter. A Native from South-Africa, her parents decided to immigrate to the USA in 1996 with a goal in mind, success and a better future for their family. Over the years, the Venter family has expanded their love for animals, thus today they find themselves residing on a beautiful 10 acre property known as, ARH Farm. ARH Farm is not your typical everyday show barn, the atmosphere is filled with relaxed, friendly and down-to-earth horse people with one thing in common, A LOVE FOR HORSES. Izilda’s natural ability to work with horses, and her love for animals and children is truly amazing! When it comes to teaching or training horses and riders, Izilda strives to make her goals: SAFETY, and the importance of patience and dedication.

“I strongly believe in respect, patience, a lot of hard work and dedication [giving every opportunity you get, all you have to give) in whatever it is you choose to do in life. You can achieve the world, with just those simple things in life. Izilda’s Motto for Life”

Pertaining to the City of Milton, it’s definitely important to keep Agricultural influence for future generations because in today’s society many children grow up without exposure to domesticated farm animals.

Why are horses important in today’s society, and how do they affect our lives? Horses have unconditional love; they give so much without expecting anything in return, they just continue to give and give! They seem to be especially very patient and understanding when you’re nervous or timid. Horses have also been used in Therapeutic riding programs to help the disabled & handicapped people. It has been proved that horses is a great therapy to us human beings as it helps improve motor-skills, balance, communication skills, build confidence and what a great companion to have, these animals have so much love to give, is so smart and have so much character, just to name a few! Horses teach us to be dedicated to things in life, to keep on trying without giving up, motivation is an important characteristic to have in live for that’s what keeps you going. We all have our disappointments, but what’s important is how we deal with it and do we let it keep us from doing what we love to do. Having horses can be very time consuming, and if you have young children what better way to occupy them? Horses are and can be dangerous yes, therefore it is so important to be taught the proper way by a professional, how to handle each horse and how to deal with dangerous or difficult situations, but driving in a car can be just as dangerous not to mention getting on a freeway going 60 mph with semi truck flying by you!

We went and asked a few horse lovers a few questions:

Question:

1. What effect does horses have on today’s society?

Alea Knar (11 years old) : “Horses gives us more responsibilities, we never get bored and keeps us out of trouble, when I think of horses I think of having a good time, enjoying myself, being able to take my mind of things and make me forget about my problems, something money can’t buy.”

Allie Knar (7 years old) : “Horses makes me want to go riding, it’s a good thing and always fun to be around!”

Tiffany Martin: “Horses play a huge recreational role in today’s society, it definately is a huge stress reliever for both young and old, I believe being an equestrain is a great way to teach young children responsibility and also help create a great escape from a typical day to day city lifestyle by exposing us to the agricultural lifestyles.

Question:

2. How have horses affected your life?

Alea Knar (11) : “Horses made my life better, cause now I have more stuff to do, more responsibilities, I get to go out to the barn and see all the horses and my friends and trainers and I totally love every second of it!” And quickly added: “Except when I get really hot cleaning out stalls!”

Tiffany Martin: “Gosh, how has horses NOT affected my life?!? Tiffany asked with a grin on her face, then added: “Horses have been my driving force behind every major decision I’ve made in my life.”

Laurie Knar: “Once you own a horse it affects every aspect in your life, if you truly are a responsible horse owner. Horses are expensive thus monthly planning & financial planning plays a big role however the biggest effect they’ve had on me and my whole family is their willingness of unconditional love!”

Question:

3. If horses did not exists, what would you rather be doing and why?

Tiffany Martin: “I’d be miserable, I wouldn’t have a life!”

Laurie Knar: “There is no replacement, there’s absolutely nothing like it, horses give out so much and expect nothing in return from us!”

Question:

4. Do you think there’s a better feeling than spending time with a horse?

Laurie Knar: “I think you could spend your time on a more global level, doing charity work all day long and I can guarantee you, it won’t be as rewarding as being around a horse! These guys are such beautiful creatures with so much personality and character!” They teach us: respect, patience, kindness, love, how to set realistic goals & expectations, it truly is amazing how we can gain mutual trust and bond with a 1200 lb. animal that can get out of control any second!”

Question:

5. What are the rewards you get out of owning / riding horses?

Alea Knar (11) : “Ribbons at shows when I do well, getting to ride, having a friend and or partnership with your favorite pet that you can trust!”

Tiffany Martin: “Integrity, a sense of accomplishments, true happiness, self satisfaction, learn things that are hard to be taught, how to handle tough times, disappointments, and never to give up in life.”

Laurie Knar: ” UNCONDITIONAL LOVE!”

Question:

6. What are the Pros and. Cons of being an equestrian?

Alea Knar (11): “You’re never bored, you always have fun at the barn, I have a lot of great memories riding, hanging out with friends & horse people, ribbons at shows, fun horse activities with friends” Cons: “Horses are expensive and require a lot of work to care for them.”

Allie Knar (7): “I can help feed, I get to ride horses, groom them, play with them and turn them out in their pastures.” CONS: “They get in big trouble sometimes and bite you, and then they go into Time OUT!”

Tiffany Martin: “Never being bored, happiness and satisfaction, relaxed and peaceful atmosphere, in terms of disabled and handicapped people, therapeutic riding has been used for years now as it helps improves motor skills, self confidence, communication skills; people with special needs and helps people physically and mentally with depression and psychological impairments.” CONS: “Horses are expensive and very time consuming, horses can be dangerous at times also.”

Laurie Knar: “Horses helped me and my family set our goals and we try to accomplish them. Horses are like humans, each one is a unique individual no two are alike; therefore you learn to handle each horse and situation differently. They’re such smart & unique animals!” CONS: “You never have enough time or money, horses are a huge responsibility, and some cases a constant worry when they are ill and a big investment. Having said that, you still can’t own enough of them, haha!”

When you’re watching a 4 year old girl get on a 1200 lb horse, it truly is amazing to see them both getting a little frustrating with each other, miss communicating cues and being nervous, give it time and patience, and the whole picture changes, there’s nothing better than taking a student from being a nervous & timid rider, to learning how to control a horse, how to walk, post at the trot and sit the canter, jumping crossrails and eventually jumping the bigger 2’6 jumps, it’s amazing to see your goals being accomplished! Being involved in horses and in the horse community has been so rewarding to me, I can’t imagine a day in life without a horse around, there are things money can’t buy and integrity, happiness and self satisfaction is more important to me than what car I drive! I would really like to encourage all the young youth out there to get involved in sports and activities they like to do. If you’re not really an active athlete find a good group of peers to hang out with as peer pressure is such a huge problem in today’s society. I’ve found that youth groups and church activities and horse barns or horse people are always a great place to meet very nice people.
